What is Quinone Dioxime?

Quinone dioxime (CAS 105-11-3), with a chemical formula C6H6N2O2, is a vulcanizing agent used to treat rubber and other elastomers. At the molecular level, rubber material is vulcanized when rubber (polymer) molecular chains form cross-links, increasing the rigidity and durability of the rubber material. (link to vulcanization literature) Quinone dioxime is special, in part, because it is a sulfur-free vulcanizing agent. It can be very effective in applications where the control of odors is important. One of the most common vulcanizing agents is sulfur, which is commonly used to treat natural rubber. But the use of sulfur often results in unwanted odors. Quinone dioxime can often solve that problem. Another special unique feature of QDO is that it imparts significant heat resistance and chemical resistance to elastomers, which results in its use across a wide range of industries. What Industries Use QDO?

Most Common Uses
A diverse range of industries use quinone dioxime (CAS 105-11-3) across many different applications. The automotive and aviation industries can use QDO to impart high temperature durability during the manufacture of tires. In 2021, a United Nations report writes, “A predominant use of QDO is in the manufacture of tires. QDO is a rubber vulcanization curative and accelerator producing unique properties. QDO is important to tire safety and hence transport safety in that it imparts to tire rubber a high impermeability through high-density polymer / molecular cross-linking, and resistance to de-crosslinking when attacked by heat or chemicals.” The automotive and aviation industries also utilize QDO in the production of heat-resistant seals and hoses. QDO has also found use as an ingredient to automotive adhesives. It reacts with peroxy-free radicals to tie up free radicals and metal adhesion promoter between metal and rubber. Electrical Equipment: The heat resistant feature that QDO imparts to elastomers also makes it useful in the manufacture of high voltage elastomers, and molded electrical components. QDO is even used in the application of undersea cables.

Pharmaceutical: The odor-free benefit of sulfur-free QDO also finds application in medical bottle closures and pharmaceutical production. p-Quinone dioxime is used as a non-sulfur vulcanization accelerator in biomedical engineering. Mining: QDO can be used as an additive and accelerator to high-energy chemical mixtures for the purpose of quarrying. Building Materials: Rubber sealants (RV), etc and heat-resistant seals and hoses. Miscellaneous: Worker chemical personal protection equipment (PPE)

Is All QDO the Same?

Quinone dioxime (CAS 105-11-3), also known as QDO or PQD, is available in several different forms and formulations:
  • Dry Quinone dioxime: Dry QDO (less than 1% water) is the most widely used product. As QDO dries, it becomes more hazardous to handle. The hazard classification of QDO is 4.1
  • Dry, Micronized Quinone dioxime: This product is first dried, and then micronized carefully to obtain a particle size of less than 45 microns. Micronization of QDO is dangerous and has to be taken seriously because of the explosive properties of QDO. This product has a hazard classification of 4.1
  • Wet Quinone dioxime: This product appears as a wet cake (10-15% water) and is part of the final steps of the production of QDO. Wet QDO is more safe to handle, less explosive and has a hazard classification of 1.4.
  • Other formulations of QDO: We can make other proprietary formulations of QDO with oils/ other solvents etc as desired by the end user.
